Recent changes to Queensland smoke alarm legislation now mandate that all substantially renovated residences and new properties approved after January 1, 2017, be equipped with interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarm systems.
The legislation specifies that smoke alarms must be installed:
- On every storey
- In all bedrooms
- In hallways that connect bedrooms to other areas of the home
- In the absence of a hallway, between bedrooms and other sections of the storey
- If no bedrooms are present on a storey, at least one smoke alarm must be placed in the most probable exit path
All smoke alarms must be of the photoelectric type and either hardwired to the mains power supply with a battery backup or powered by a 10-year non-removable lithium battery. Additionally, smoke alarms must be interconnected, meaning that if one alarm is activated, all alarms in the dwelling will sound simultaneously, providing the earliest and most comprehensive warning of a fire. Interconnection can be achieved either through wired or wireless means.
Furthermore, any smoke alarm installed or replaced from January 1, 2017, must be a photoelectric model.
For optimal safety, it is essential that hardwired smoke alarms be installed by a licensed electrician.
